Recent News: U of M researchers assess effectiveness of CPOE system June 27, 2007 -- An analysis of 12 studies conducted between 1990 and 2005 concluded that by implementing a computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system, the incidence of medication errors can be reduced. The rate of medication errors has risen dramatically from about 5 percent in 1992 to a staggering 25 percent today and medication errors are identified as a major threat to patient safety. The review co-author concludes that “hospitals would be short-sighted not to use it (CPOE).” Of note, one type of medication error was not reduced by implementing CPOE and that type was prescribing the wrong medication.
